The Guild = Awesome

June 11, 2011 Leave a comment

So I’m a little bit late getting on board with this show, but I’ve become addicted to watching ‘The Guild’, a web series about a group of WoW addicted nerds trying to get along in the real world.

Coincidentally, Felicia Day is going to be at the Calgary Comic Expo next weekend. Should I go and tell her I’ve developed a nerd-crush on her?

More likely I’ll show up and act really awkward, cause y’know, I’m a nerd and all.

My Top 10 Sci-Fi/Fantasy Novels: #6 – To Say Nothing of the Dog

#6 – To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis (1997)

Connie Willis has become one of my favourite authors. Most of her books take place in the same universe, in which University history professors have access to time-travel technology to help them study the past.

‘To Say Nothing of the Dog’ is a comic science fiction story following the (mis)adventures of Ned Henry and Verity Kindle, two folks from the year 2057 who have been sent back to pre-World War II England.

Their objective is to find the ‘Bishop’s Bird Stump’, a piece of Victorian…something, that is necessary for a wealthy American woman to complete the restoration of the Coventry Cathedral, which was destroyed by German bombings during the war.

While the main story sounds a tad dry, Willis’ hilarious writing style,  lovable characters and possible time paradoxes make this a real page turner; something difficult to do for a comedy novel.

The Onion Hits the Nail on the Head

Phil Plait posted this link on his blog, and I had to share it as well.

It so well articulates the current political climate in the United States that, despite the fact that an asteroid is not headed for Earth, it should get circulated like mainstream news stories.

The Onion: you are awesome!

“Republicans Vote To Repeal Obama-Backed Bill That Would Destroy Asteroid Headed For Earth”

My favourite quote from the article:

In an effort to counter Republicans’ claims, Democrats have asserted that the long-term benefits of preventing the United States from being incinerated by an explosion several billion times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb would far outweigh the initial monetary outlay.

Why “Pandas are dicks!”

Ok, before you start drafting your angry comments to me, let me start by saying that I love pandas. Everybody loves pandas!

In fact, the birth of two rare red pandas was just announced at the Winnipeg Assiniboine Park Zoo.

Is there a cuter freakin' animal on this planet? Photo: CBC

There are only 8000 surviving red pandas, who are native to the Himalayas. The massive drop in their number is caused by man, through poaching and deforestation.

The more familiar Giant Panda is also native to China, and has a diet consisting of 99% bamboo. They are threatened by extinction due to habitat loss and a very low birth rate.

Although I love pandas, one of my favourite comics, Jim Jefferies, has a different opinion than me. While I disagree with him, he is fuckin hilarious!
