The Guild = Awesome

June 11, 2011 Leave a comment

So I’m a little bit late getting on board with this show, but I’ve become addicted to watching ‘The Guild’, a web series about a group of WoW addicted nerds trying to get along in the real world.

Coincidentally, Felicia Day is going to be at the Calgary Comic Expo next weekend. Should I go and tell her I’ve developed a nerd-crush on her?

More likely I’ll show up and act really awkward, cause y’know, I’m a nerd and all.

Chess Boxing. Yeah, Chess Boxing

Apparently, Chess-Boxing is a real thing. And frankly, it sounds awesome. (Via Wired)

It works like this: Each player is allotted 12 minutes of chess-playing time each. So the two competitors play 4 minutes of speed chess. If nobody wins in that 4 minutes, they box for 3 minutes.

If nobody gets knocked out, they rest for a minute and then play another 4 minutes of speed chess. This continues until somebody gets checkmated or their clock cleaned.

Below is a preview of an upcoming chess-boxing match between Bjorn Jónsson (whose sense of modesty is one of his defining qualities), and Daniel Thordarson (who is employing the ‘Pavlov’ method of training).

Is it wrong that the first two people I thought about chess-boxing were Screech Powers and that Russian guy from Valley?

Promoted! Well, in Starcraft…

Not a job promotion, that would be sweeter (a little). But I did just get promoted to Gold league in Starcraft 2.

That’s pretty much all that’s new with me in the last few days. Although I did start taking skiing lessons, built some furniture, saw ‘The King’s Speech’, got over a fever, caught up on reading, cooked some new recipes, taught a 3 hour training session at work while also catching up on a ton of work that piled up over the long weekend.

So yeah, I missed posting this weekend. But I have been uncharacteristically busy. Though not too busy that I couldn’t practice my Zerg battles in SC2… (I’m a Terran player, in case you were wondering).

So back to regular schedule tomorrow. Hope you all had a great Family Day/President’s Day. We’ll talk science soon!

Final Fantasy XIII-2 Trailer Released. Yeah, I’m a Nerd. Shocker!

Yeah, FF XIII was a bit disappointing. But remember, it was only disappointing in comparison to other Final Fantasy games.

XIII was still a pretty damn good game, and XIII-2 will be great too.

It will be released in North America either right around Christmas 2011 or Q1 2012.
