Awful(ly Awesome) Re-enactment of Aeris’ Death Scene From FFVII

Are you an uber-nerd like me? Then you’ll find this quite amusing.

The actual death scene is still perhaps the single most memorable moment from a video game I’ve ever seen.

I think auroras are one of the coolest things on the planet. Along with bacon and beer.

This video was featured on the Astronomy Picture of the Day website. Two words:

Chess Boxing. Yeah, Chess Boxing

Apparently, Chess-Boxing is a real thing. And frankly, it sounds awesome. (Via Wired)

It works like this: Each player is allotted 12 minutes of chess-playing time each. So the two competitors play 4 minutes of speed chess. If nobody wins in that 4 minutes, they box for 3 minutes.

If nobody gets knocked out, they rest for a minute and then play another 4 minutes of speed chess. This continues until somebody gets checkmated or their clock cleaned.

Below is a preview of an upcoming chess-boxing match between Bjorn Jónsson (whose sense of modesty is one of his defining qualities), and Daniel Thordarson (who is employing the ‘Pavlov’ method of training).

Is it wrong that the first two people I thought about chess-boxing were Screech Powers and that Russian guy from Valley?

SURVEY SAYS… More Female Star Trek Fans Than Male

A blog called Subspace Communique took an online poll of Star Trek fans in preparation for publishing a book called ‘The Anthropology of Star Trek’. The poll garnered 5041 participants and focused on how Star Trek fans view themselves and how  much they participate in Star Trek fan culture.

Most of the results were not surprising; 67% said they would be more involved in Star Trek culture if they had the money; 82% felt that their involvment in Star Trek fandom was “average to below average”; 43% said they refer to themselves as a “trekkie”.

But the most surprising result? 57% of the fans were female! I know, right!?

Now, the skeptic inside me wants to say things like, “Probably just more females were willing to take the survey”. But I’m going to tell that part of me to shut-up for now, and try to imagine how much different high school would have been if more girls were into Star Trek back then.

While I enjoy that fantasy, you can watch this video of a girl clearly OK with her Star Trek obsession. Enjoy!

Poker and Star Trek

After playing some poker with friends last night (I broke even, if you were wondering) I was reminded of one of my favourite scenes from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Enjoy!
