Yes, my alma-mater, the University of Western Ontario, home of world-class scientific research, has been named #4 on Playboy’s annual ranking of the Top 10 Party Schools in North America. [WARNING: Link NSFW]

How is this prestigious list determined?

We gather info from thousands of students from our Playboy on-campus Facebook pages, survey our students reps at schools across North America and interview countless others. We draw up stats (male-female ratio, winning percentage of sports teams, etc) and add bonus points for schools in the vicinity of beaches, ski slopes and music scenes.

In other words, they just kinda pick and choose.

But still…Woooooo! Partaaaay!

My favourite occasions were always Rick McGhie at the Wave on Wednesdays, Friday afternoons at the Grad Club, and Pancake Keggers for St. Patty’s Day.

Let’s see, can I find a picture of my drunk self from University?

Well, that’s the morning after… in a bed other than my own. Close enough.

Party on!

When Do Students At My University Drink Most?

The University of western Ontario

A study published in the Journal of American College Health did a study of 415 students at a “large University in Southwestern, Ontario, Canada”. Which, of course, means the University of Western Ontario.

What did the results show?

Findings indicated that alcohol consumption varies considerably as a function of time of the academic year. Overall trends indicate that students drink more heavily at the beginning of each semester and less during exam periods. Daily patterns indicate that most drinking occurs on weekends. The highest drinking days in the first academic year included Halloween, New Year’s Eve, and St. Patrick’s Day.

Surprising? No. Nostalgic? Yes.

Happy New Year’s Western!

My Old Prof Found Buckyballs in Space!

I went to the University of Western Ontario (UWO). Its a great school, I had lots of fun. I also studied physics occasionally while I was there.

And one of my old professors just made headlines!

Dr. Jan Cami, an astronomer at UWO, recently published a paper in Science reporting that they have found ‘buckyballs’, carbon molecules made up of 60 carbon atoms arranged in a sphere, in a planetary nebula known as Tc 1.

Buckyball, also known as Carbon-60

This is an important discovery because buckyballs have long been suspected of absorbing light from distant objects. They were able to find the buckyballs by studying the light from a white dwarf star within the nebula, and spotting the signature of Carbon-60 and Carbon-70.

The chemical signature from the dust of the planetary nebula matched exactly with the fullerenes C60 and C70. (NASA/JPL-Caltech/J. Cami, University of Western Ontario/SETI Institute)

So congrats to Dr. Cami! I recall he postponed a meeting with me once so that he could buy tickets to see The Police. And I respected him more for it.

You are a great prof and a great guy. You work hard and this is the payoff.
