My Adventures at the Calgary Comic Expo

June 20, 2011 Leave a comment

Despite being a lifetime nerd, I have never been to a sci-fi or comic book convention!

I know, I know. The lack of nerd cred on my part is somewhat disheartening.

But don’t worry, because my Comic expo virginity has now been taken by the Calgary Comic Expo.

I had a really great time. I got to meet some great people, saw some live StarCraft action, and even got a chance to hear William Shatner speak and take some questions from the audience.

What blew me away most though were the costumes. The amount of work that must go into some of them was astounding. Here are a few samples:

Wolverine and...someone I recognize but can't remember the name.

The contact lenses show a nice level of dedication to the costume.

X-Men. And woman. X-People I suppose.

Bob from ReBoot. I was impressed at the number of ReBoot fans.

Dude behind him is checking out his ass, I think.

The hands look a little big to me.

Thundercats! Awesome!

Elektra, some dude, and Poison Ivy.

The one on the right is a different shade of green. Maybe she was sick?

Creepy. Creepy/Awesome.

William Shatner also gave a talk to a crowd of about 4000. He was made an honorary Calgarian by the Mayor of Calgary, and took some audience questions.

One such question went like this:

Girl: This question is from my Dad. What was it like being on ‘Star Trek’?

Shatner: Tell your dad that I was cleaning green paint off myself every night!

Crowd: *Applause*

He was actually a very funny guy and very entertaining.

I also found out that DC comics is rebooting all of its stories, so maybe I can start reading comic books and actually know whats going on!

All in all, a great time and lots of great people. I’ll be back again next year!

Awful(ly Awesome) Re-enactment of Aeris’ Death Scene From FFVII

Are you an uber-nerd like me? Then you’ll find this quite amusing.

The actual death scene is still perhaps the single most memorable moment from a video game I’ve ever seen.

Sooo….What’s Your Sign? *wink*

Of course, I mean on the Geek Zodiac.

Based on the Chinese Zodiac, the Geek Zodiac goes by year of birth.

Turns out I am a Robot:

ROBOT (Optimus Prime, RoboCop, Terminator, Voltron)

+ Law abiding, dedicated, logical

– Stubborn, intractable, cold

(Why 1984? The year both the Terminator and Transformers debut)

I was hoping I would be a Wizard, but I guess you can’t argue with the stars.

What to Look For in Your First Telescope

January 31, 2011 Leave a comment

If you read this blog, then it’s probably safe to assume that you have at least a mild interest in science. You probably enjoy looking at stars and really sweet astronomical pictures, which is what got me interested in science too.

You may even have considered buying your own telescope so you can check out the stars and boost your nerdiness factor up a notch.

Telescopes come in a huge range of sizes, types, and most importantly: PRICES! Picking your first telescope can be a daunting task. So I wanted to point you to an article by Mark Thompson on Discovery News about the basics of buying your first telescope.

The key points are:

  1. Consider starting out with binoculars, since they are cheaper than telescopes.
  2. Magnification means nothing! The aperture of the telescope is most important!
  3. Of the two types of telescopes (Reflectors and Refractors) Reflectors will give you the most bang for your buck.
  4. Try before buy.

Your local astronomical society will often hold events where you can go and check out some different telescopes. Even some stores which sell telescopes will let you try them out for a while before buying it.

My personal advice: GO TO AN EXPERT!

Please do not buy your telescope from Wal-Mart or Radio Shack or somewhere like that. Talk to someone who knows what they are talking about. Nerds will always look out for other nerds, so they will be happy to give you all the help you need.

Happy Gazing!

Final Fantasy XIII-2 Trailer Released. Yeah, I’m a Nerd. Shocker!

January 20, 2011 Leave a comment

Yeah, FF XIII was a bit disappointing. But remember, it was only disappointing in comparison to other Final Fantasy games.

XIII was still a pretty damn good game, and XIII-2 will be great too.

It will be released in North America either right around Christmas 2011 or Q1 2012.

Are You Nerd Enough? A Periodic Coffee Table

July 18, 2010 Leave a comment

If your bookshelf full of Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein doesn’t convey enough “nerd vibe” for your apartment, perhaps you should pick up this so-amazing-I-can’t-believe-it coffee table.

I came across this one through one of my frequent forays into Gizmodo.

This coffee table not only has a periodic table of the elements engraved into the glass, but also has pieces of the elements themselves embedded into the glass as well!

For a mere $8550 US, you could be the nerdiest guy on the block.

And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, why you can even option to have your school or corporate logo engraved into the table as well.
