Congratulations to The Arcade Fire

The Arcade Fire, winners of the 2010 Grammy for Best Album entitled "The Suburbs"

I’m digressing from my usual science-y content, but in my internet travels it has been brought to my attention that even though they won the Grammy for Best Album, many people have never heard of the Arcade Fire.

Ok, not just Rosie O’Donnell, but others as well. (This Tumblr page made me want to bang my head against the wall)

The consensus of these people seems to be: “I have never heard of them, therefore they suck and I hate them!”

Whoa there, let’s all just relax.

Now, since The Arcade Fire are from Canada (you can listen to many of their songs for free on CBC Radio 3), I have been a fan of them for several years. But I guess they don’t get the exposure from Ryan Seacrest and Top 40 stations in order to break into the American music scene.

Just because you haven’t heard of them, doesn’t mean they aren’t great. In fact, isn’t one of the best things about music is the discovery of a new band that you enjoy?

So hopefully you will give them a chance. I’m sorry if you haven’t heard of them before, but there’s a lot more to music than Katy Perry and Justin Bieber.

Why I Was Almost Late for Work Today

Oh xkcd. How is it that you are so intuitive to my daily life?

Sometimes in the morning I just don’t move very fast.

Now to be fair, I did go to the gym around 6:30, showered and then sat at the computer to check emails and so forth. Then of course I check on my blog and see the comments to my recent post about water fluoridation in Calgary.

I just find it really interesting that I simply can’t help myself. I HAVE to immediately check people’s references, quotes and basically do fact checking. It sounds so unexciting, yet I just couldn’t wait until after work to do it.

Luckily though, a road along my bus route which was closed, opened today and made traffic run much smoother. Couple that with the bus arriving just as I walk up to my bus stop, and I actually got to work earlier than usual, despite leaving later than I should have.

I guess the scientific gods (?) were smiling upon me today.

Admittedly it is a bit late to purchase these valentines in time for, well, tonight. But damn it if they aren’t awesome.

These are for sale on Etsy and are done by Stephanie Burrows Fox. Great stuff Stephanie!
